A Memphis woman has been taken into custody following a shooting at the Summer Trace Apartments, as reported by local authorities. Lashan Johnson, 35, is facing charges of aggravated assault in connection with the incident which occurred yesterday morning.
According to Action News 5, the altercation began just before 9:15 a.m., where witnesses describe hearing a disturbance followed by a gunshot. One individual was then seen lying on the ground. After the event, it is reported that Johnson drove the victim, identified as her boyfriend, to Baptist East Hospital with a gunshot wound that she purported was self-inflicted.
The victim was later transferred to Regional One Hospital in critical condition, as revealed by FOX13 Memphis. During this time, he underwent surgery. The severity of his condition spurred a swift response from law enforcement and the medical team.
Witness statements given to MPD and documented in an affidavit suggest a more confrontational scene. One witness claimed she observed Johnson and the victim, both armed, engaged in a heated argument outside the apartments. She recounted seeing Johnson curse and attempt to "pistol whip" the victim in the head before he tried to restrain her, "when he backed up, she raised her pistol and shot him one time in the hip area," Action News 5. The aftermath of the incident found Johnson allegedly instructing the victim that he had shot himself, despite his plea, "B***h, you shot me. I'm going to die."
Responding officers located a .40 caliber round at the scene, and Johnson was identified as the assailant. She is currently held on a $200,000 bond and is scheduled for a court appearance today. This incident underlines the ongoing concerns surrounding domestic disturbances and gun violence, topics that remain heated points of debate within the community.
