
Michael Bailey, a native Logan High alum and a current senior research scientist at Meta, has recently been recognized by Utah State University's Jon M. Huntsman School of Business with the 2024 Professional Achievement Award, an accolade highlighting his exceptional contributions to technology and policy-making. Bailey's journey began at USU, where, according to USU Today, he was deeply influenced by mentors and a curriculum that instilled in him a strong work ethic and a penchant for innovating. Reflecting on his philosophy towards career and innovation, Bailey emphasized uniqueness, advising, "Discover what's unique about you and pursue those characteristics onto a new path."
After joining Facebook in 2012, the year the company went public his, arguably unique career took shape around the intersection of technology and economics, Bailey found himself quite literally at the frontier of building future technologies from scratch, with a team, equally eager to innovate and experiment. Within Meta, Bailey has spearheaded the Social Capital Lab, pioneering research in social networks and economic opportunity in an attempt to arm policymakers with advanced tools for societal improvement. His ground-breaking work has been acknowledged globally, as the data from Meta's Data for Good program is employed to aid crisis-stricken communities and foster resilience, informed by the aggregated movement data and social capital stands as testimony to his impact.
At the award ceremony held on November 8, Bailey not only accepted his honors but also shared his experiences and research with current students and faculty at USU, reinforcing his commitment to academic engagement and mentoring, Michael Bailey told USU Today about the high value he places on collaboration and critical thinking. His dedication to guiding and inspiring future data analysts is evident through his work with USU's Analytics Solutions Center (ASC), where he has been involved in diverse and significant projects that blend cutting-edge data analytics with tangible social insights.
