Miami-Dade County and the Commonwealth of The Bahamas are now formally united in cinematic endeavors, following the signing of a pact dedicated to the enhancement of their respective film sectors. According to an announcement from Miami-Dade County earlier this week, Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and Bahamian officials inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to foster film education, promotion, and economic collaboration.
The agreement, brokered by the Miami-Dade Office of Film and Entertainment along with the Bahamas Film & Television Commission, aims to create a shared framework for growing their film industries. "This partnership marks a new chapter for the film industries of Miami-Dade County and the Bahamas, neighbor communities,” stated Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “By working together, we can foster creativity, expand opportunities, and strengthen the economic impact of film production in both our communities. This MOU is a testament to the power of collaboration and our shared commitment to supporting the arts and culture industries." The Bahamas has been a desirable film location for centuries, with its history harkening back to the early days of underwater cinema in 1916, as per the county's official announcement.
The signing ceremony, attended by a host of dignitaries, underscores the significance of this cinematic partnership. "The film industry in The Bahamas has had its share of historic days, and today is as historic as any other," Lisa Adderley-Anderson, the Acting Permanent Secretary in the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism, Investments & Aviation, told attendees, as noted by the county's press release. She emphasized the uplifting symbiosis between Miami-Dade and The Bahamas as they marked 40 years since the establishment of the Bahamas Film Commission.
Noteworthy attendees at the historic agreement signing included Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson, Senator Rene Garcia, and Bahamian Consul General in Miami, Curt Hollingsworth. Hon. Ginger Moxey, Minister for Grand Bahama, expressed her gratitude for the perseverance of those who worked on the MOU, remarking, "I am aware that it took many months of discussions and considerations to make today’s event happen," as reported by Miami-Dade County's official release.
