A motorcyclist was killed Monday afternoon after he T-boned a Hyundai Sonata that had turned into his path at the intersection of Bird Road and Red Road in Miami-Dade County. Florida Highway Patrol says the rider, who has not been publicly identified, died at the scene after his Kawasaki T-boned the turning sedan just before 4 p.m.
According to WPLG Local 10, the Hyundai Sonata driver was traveling westbound on Southwest 40th Street, better known as Bird Road, when they turned onto 57th Avenue, also known as Red Road, directly into the motorcyclist's path. The rider was thrown from his Kawasaki in the collision. FHP spokesperson Alex Camacho said the motorcyclist died at the scene.
What Investigators Have Not Yet Said
Authorities have not said whether the Hyundai driver will face any citation or criminal charges as the investigation continues, per the station's report. The motorcyclist's identity had also not been released as of the crash report. It remains unclear whether signal timing or sightlines played a role in the collision, and troopers have not indicated whether the rider was wearing a helmet.
Florida law does require motorcyclists to wear protective headgear, though riders 21 and older may legally forgo one if they carry an insurance policy with at least $10,000 in medical benefits, according to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Left-turn collisions like this one often hinge on Florida Statute § 316.122, which requires drivers turning left to yield to oncoming traffic close enough to pose an immediate hazard, with failure to yield treated as a moving violation, according to Avard Law Offices.
A Dangerous Stretch of Road, and a Dangerous State for Riders
The crash site sits along a municipal boundary linking Coral Gables, South Miami, and unincorporated Miami-Dade County, according to the City of Coral Gables. Both roads are state-maintained arterials — Bird Road is designated State Road 976 and Red Road is State Road 959 — under a framework laid out by the City of Doral.
The fatal crash comes just two days after a Miami officer was hurt in a Turnpike crash near the same Bird Road corridor, when a police motorcycle officer was hospitalized after colliding on Florida's Turnpike near the Bird Road exit. In July, a septic tank truck rollover near the same interchange also proved fatal, underscoring the corridor's recurring safety concerns.
Florida led the nation in motorcycle fatalities in 2024 with 642 deaths, ahead of Texas and California, according to an analysis of federal crash data cited by Attorney Shapiro. State crash data from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles shows 9,455 motorcycle collisions and 598 rider deaths statewide in 2024 alone. Motorcycle crashes make up roughly 2% of all Florida vehicle collisions but account for nearly 18% of traffic fatalities statewide, according to Abrahamson & Uiterwyk.
Miami-Dade County alone logged an estimated 55,530 total vehicle collisions and 271 traffic deaths in 2025, averaging roughly 152 crashes every day, according to preliminary state data cited by Wolfson & Leon. Florida Highway Patrol's investigation into Monday's crash at Bird and Red roads remains ongoing.
