The Miami Parking Authority (MPA) has taken decisive action to prevent scams that prey on motorists using city parking meters. In response to the rise of fraudulent QR codes being placed over legitimate city parking meter codes, the MPA has initiated the removal of all QR codes from over 7,000 parking signs across the city. This move is aimed at protecting consumers from being directed to fake websites that could compromise their personal, and banking information while attempting to pay for parking.
CBS News reported that Alejandra Argudin, CEO of the Miami Parking Authority, said, "We want them to know that there are QR codes that have been posted on our signs that can lead to fraudulent websites that could compromise your banking and personal information when making a payment for parking."
Local resident Miguel Ochoa recommended using the PayByPhone app for its convenience and to avoid scams. "I recommend that, it's very good," Ochoa told Local 10 report.
An MPA spokeswoman revealed that dozens of fake QR codes have been detected, yet, despite the pervasiveness of the issue, there have been no reports of consumers actually being scammed or losing money through these deceptive methods. "We urge the public not to use any QR codes and to use the Pay-by-Phone App so they can keep their personal and banking information secure," Argudin emphasized during her interview with CBS News.
For those who believe they were compromised, help is available 24/7 at the MPA's hotline: (305) 579-4900.
