A high-speed pursuit that began in Indiana came to a dramatic halt in Chicago's Back of the Yards neighborhood when a suspect, who initiated a police chase with a toddler in his car, was apprehended after attempting to flee on foot.
Authorities from the Lake County Sheriff's Department stated that their officers, together with officials from Highland, Indiana police, and support from the Aviation Unit helicopter, pursued a black BMW from Hammond, Indiana to Illinois, as reported by Chicago Sun-Times. The driver, a 26-year-old man from Illinois, led the law enforcement on a chase after 5:00 p.m. which passed through various streets including Torrence Avenue in Hammond, not to be mistaken for Chicago's Torrence Avenue, and then made its way onto I-94 across the state border.
Upon reaching near 53rd and Morgan streets, the vehicle was stopped using an immobilization technique; the driver then exited the vehicle leaving behind a 4-year-old child, and continued the attempted escape on foot, only to be subdued with a stun device and taken into custody, as reported by CBS News Chicago.
The child was found unharmed and paramedics at the scene evaluated the minor before placing them in the care of relatives. The man now faces charges including felony fleeing, reckless endangerment of a child, and marijuana possession, with extradition back to Indiana pending while he awaits the legal ramifications of his actions.
