The Nashville community is dealing with the aftermath of a shooting on Murfreesboro Pike in South Nashville that resulted in the death of 18-year-old Ashley Dominguez. Two weeks have passed since the incident, but the suspect is still not caught. Maira Fragaso, the victim's sister, expressed her grief, saying the family is now focused on funeral arrangements instead of holiday preparations. In a statement to WSMV, she described her sister, "She was our light."
Advocates and community members gathered at the Historic Metro Courthouse for a vigil to honor Ashley Dominguez and call for change regarding gun violence impacting youth. The Tennessee Hispanic Action Network, along with the Dominguez family, placed 728 white roses outside the courthouse.
Melissa Alvarez Zabriskie explained to NewsChannel 5, "Each rose represents a life lost to gun violence in our city in the last 10 years."
The vigil also gave Dominguez's family a chance to call for legislative action and improved community safety. "Justice needs to be served for my sister," Maira Fragaso told reporters, according to WKRN.
While Metro Nashville Police have interviewed multiple individuals in relation to the shooting, their investigation has yet to yield an arrest. Alvarez-Zabriskie's point, as told to NewsChannel 5, beckons for attention and action: "So we know that there is a problem in Antioch right but what are we doing to fix it?"
