As the year nears its close, Nashville’s issue with stolen guns has not waned but shifted arenas. The Nashville Police Department reports a noticeable rise in firearms theft from vehicles rather than homes or other locations. According to data just released, a staggering 73% of all reported gun thefts in Davidson County have occurred from automobiles.

The total tally of stolen guns reported in Nashville for 2024 stands at 1,142 so far, with 838, of those thefts traced back to vehicles. In a concerning comparison, 2023's data showed 1,123 firearm thefts from vehicles at this same point last year - marking what could be seen as a slight improvement, or a lesser volume of such incidents, this year. The MNPD has denounced this practice and continues to urge the public to lock their doors, and secure valuables—especially guns, while removing all keys from unattended vehicles.

Since the inception of a special initiative on February 1 to tackle vehicle theft and associated crimes, the MNPD has executed 957 arrests. Additionally, they have recovered 511 stolen vehicles and 201 of the stolen guns, highlighting the linkage between vehicular theft and gun-related crime.

Last week alone saw 15 guns lifted from automobiles. In response to this spate of criminal activity, the police department has been unambiguous in its directives to the community. "The Nasvhille Police Department strongly encourages Nashvillians to lock their automobile doors, secure any valuables---especially guns, and remove the keys," a statement that was echoed in their latest press release.
