
The City of New Orleans is marking a milestone in urban development with the completion of the Poydras Street improvement project, a $12 million endeavor aimed at bolstering the infrastructure of a crucial city thoroughfare. The completion of the project was celebrated by the New Orleans Department of Public Works, alongside the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development and the Sewage and Water Board of New Orleans, according to a statement obtained by the City of New Orleans news production.
Revitalizing Poydras Street which stretches from Claiborne Ave. to Liberty Street and Convention Center Blvd to Loyola Ave., this project is instrumental for easing city congestion, the upgrades are set to better the flow of traffic, reduce congestion, and provide safer passage for a diverse range of city travelers; this includes drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians alike. Mayor LaToya Cantrell echoed the sentiment of the project's broad reach by stating, "Poydras Street is one of the vital arteries of New Orleans, connecting residents and visitors to the heart of our city," as she stressed the project's impact on making "the area safer and more accessible for all," as per the City of New Orleans report.
Financial backing for this street enhancement was secured through City Bonds, signaling a robust effort by the Cantrell Administration to nurture communities and fortify infrastructural foundations in anticipation of the Super Bowl LIX. Councilmember Leslie Harris from District B highlighted the city's readiness to host large-scale events saying, “As we prepare for major sporting and cultural events, this project underscores our readiness to welcome hundreds of thousands of fans, players, and visitors from across the world and I look forward to accomplishing more together," as reported by the City of New Orleans news production.
A range of improvements have been incorporated within the project including road resurfacing, patching, milling, advanced drainage solutions, and the construction of ADA-compliant curb ramps, further, a new bike lane in both directions on Poydras St. between Loyola Ave. and Convention Center Blvd has been added improving modal options for residents and visitors. Hard Rock L.L.C. developed the project which began in May 2024 and wrapped up punctually this December, during a period wherein the DPW has completed 219 projects since May 2018, valued at $1.16 billion, while currently 35 roadwork projects are under construction with an estimated value of nearly $521 million.
