Phoenix drivers can breathe a sigh of relief this weekend as the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has announced there will be no full freeway closures in the area from December 13 to December 16. However, travelers should be aware of lane and interchange restrictions along Interstate 10 near Sky Harbor Airport due to the ongoing Broadway Curve Improvement Project. According to ADOT, east- and westbound I-10 will be narrowed to two or three lanes between 40th Street and Baseline Road starting at 10 p.m. Friday until 4 a.m. Monday.
Additionally, the HOV ramps connecting I-10 with US 60 will be closed during the weekend. Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time and prepare to slow down and merge safely when approaching work zones. An alternate route that may be considered is via 32nd Street or Broadway Road as the 40th Street interchange will also be shut down. The restrictions and closures are part of a broader effort to enhance one of the central veins of Phoenix's transportation infrastructure—a project with schedules that are always subject to shifts contingent upon the ongoing progress of construction work.
In conjunction with lane restrictions, ADOT emphasizes a focus on safe driving practices. Drivers should use seat belts, observe speed limits, remain vigilant, and avoid any distractions that could impair driving capabilities. It is also recommended never to drive while under the influence and to plan for a designated driver or ride service if necessary. These precautions are in the interest of safety for both the workers and the travelers passing through these temporary alterations to their routes.
Looking beyond the weekend, the Phoenix area is preparing for future expansions and improvements in its roadway network. The projects, which are part of the larger Regional Transportation Plan for the Maricopa County region, are primarily financed by Proposition 400—a sales tax initiative approved by voters in 2004. Additional funding will ensue from Proposition 479, which voters approved this past November, ensuring the extension of the half-cent tax to finance upcoming transportation projects. For those seeking the most current highway conditions, real-time updates are available at ADOT’s Arizona Traveler Information site, the az511 app, or by calling 511, keeping drivers informed and ready to navigate the streets of Phoenix.
