The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has banned hidden junk fees during online hotel and event ticket checkouts as part of President Joe Biden's efforts to ease financial burdens on American families. These fees, which appear at the final stage of checkout, increase the total price. Yesterday, President Biden on a statement released by The White House, said, "We all know the experience of encountering a hidden fee at the very last stage of check out—these junk fees sneak onto your bill and companies end up making you pay more because they can"
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau reduced overdraft and credit card late fees, the Department of Transportation proposed ending family seating fees and requiring immediate disclosure of baggage and change fees, and the Federal Communications Commission mandated that consumers receive the full cost and terms of internet service upfront. President Biden stated on the same release, "Today’s announcement builds on work across my Administration to ban junk fees and lower costs—saving many families hundreds of dollars each year."
The FTC's crackdown is welcomed by consumer groups but may face pushback from affected industries, which have defended these fees as necessary to cover business costs. Consumers, however, argue that such costs should be included in the advertised price, not added unexpectedly at checkout. As the regulations take effect, the ongoing debate about balancing business interests and consumer protection continues to influence American commerce.
