Oakland police are currently investigating a grim discovery in West Oakland after reports of a body found wrapped in plastic. According to CBS News San Francisco, the call came in just after 8:15 a.m. on the 2300 block of Campbell St. when officers located a deceased individual seemingly concealed in a plastic garbage bag.

Homicide investigators from the Oakland Police Department have since been to quickly respond to the scene to conduct a follow-up into the circumstances surrounding the death. With the area cordoned off, the presence of multiple police units was visible in chopper footage taken above the scene. Details concerning the cause of death, however, have yet to be provided.

As per KTVU, the homicide investigators collected surveillance video from cameras mounted along Campbell Street and from several businesses nearby. Notably, Manuel Sanchez, a business manager in the area, mentioned frequent disturbances, stating, "At least once or twice a month. Around this corner, just around this corner," alluding to the broader troubles plaguing the neighborhood.

The area is familiar with the issue of illegal dumping, according to local resident Dave Callahan, who told KTVU, "This street is known for dumping, you know. They just cleaned it all out. And as soon as it gets clean, people come back and dump stuff. And they dump in the wee hours of the morning." Despite these ongoing problems, the current situation is especially troubling for the community.

While the identity of the victim is to be still withheld pending next of kin notification, the Alameda County Coroner's office staff has signaled an autopsy scheduled yesterday or next Monday. Anyone with information that could potentially assist the investigation is strongly urged to contact the OPD Homicide Section at (510) 238-3821 or the TIP LINE at 238-7950.
