As Oklahoma City embraces the holiday spirit, residents are also getting a jump on their post-holiday clean-up plans with OKC Parks offering an eco-friendly way to dispose of their live Christmas trees. From Dec. 26 through Jan. 15, locals can take their natural trees to be mulched at two park drop-off locations: Will Rogers Park and Wheeler Park, turning their once festive decorations into beneficial garden mulch, as reported by the City of Oklahoma City.
According to a recent announcement by the City of Oklahoma City official website, those interested in this green initiative need to ensure that trees are cleared of all decorations, nails, and stands and must not be flocked; the mulch created from these trees is then available for residents to collect from dawn till dusk until Jan. 15, however, they must bring their own containers and tools for retrieving the mulch—and while residents are encouraged to contribute their old trees to this program, they are not required to take mulch home if they don’t need it.
This initiative serves a dual purpose, reducing landfill waste and offering an effortless way for gardeners to protect and nourish their soil during the colder months; it is an open invitation to all who live within the city to participate, and for those who may miss the drop-off window, OKC Solid Waste services offer an alternative pickup for natural or artificial trees with their regular bulky waste collection program, as per the City of Oklahoma City.
Oklahoma City residents who opt for curbside service should set out their Christmas trees before 6 a.m. on their designated bulky waste pickup date also keeping in mind bulky waste must not be placed near obstructions such as mailboxes and should not cover utility meters, says the City of Oklahoma City's official announcement, as an additional reminder, those requiring an extra Big Blue cart for their waste can order one through the city's utilities website or by contacting them directly for a small monthly fee, should they exceed the two-cart limit.
