Thousands of healthcare workers across Oregon are on the brink of an open-ended strike following unsuccessful negotiations with Providence health care system. The Oregon Nurses Association (ONA), which represents the workers, has declared that a strike is set to commence on January 10th after both sides could not reach an agreement. The involved staff comprises doctors, nurses, and other frontline workers who play critical roles in the state’s healthcare services.
According to a report by OPB, negotiations between ONA and Providence began to unravel, leading to the strike announcement. Workers at most Providence locations voted to authorize the strike action in October and November while those at Providence Seaside and Providence Medford did so earlier this month. KOIN noted that despite intensive negotiations that involved federal mediators starting December 16th, ONA said that "it became clear that hospital management was not interested in responding to their concerns with serious proposals."
