Commuters on the southbound route of I-57 faced early morning delays as a semi-trailer overturned, blocking access to the I-294 Tri-State Tollway exit. The mishap occurred around 6:18 a.m. on Monday, when, according to NBC Chicago, the vehicle tipped onto its side leading to immediate traffic disruptions.
The extent of the semi-driver's injuries remained unclear initially, however, later reports confirmed the individual was transported to a local hospital with injuries. Tollway cameras captured the scene portraying the white semi rested on its side, remarkably the load intact. Firefighters and crews rushed to the location by approximately 6:30 a.m., as reported by ABC7 Chicago.
As crews continued their clean-up at the scene, the traffic impact spanned several hours post-incident, highlighting once more the fragility of our daily commutes and the potential for sudden alterations to our most mundanely plotted courses. There was an expectation of continued delays, as the ramps from I-57 southbound to I-294 northbound and southbound remained shut down as of 7 a.m., as per NBC Chicago.
