A fatal incident in Peoria took place Sunday morning when two police officers, responding to a reported theft, encountered a life-threatening situation that led to the death of a suspect. The incident began when a business owner, monitoring his surveillance system, witnessed an unidentified male rummaging through cars outside his closed business and alerted the police, according to a report by AZ Central.

Arriving at the scene, near Grand Avenue and Loop 101, Peoria Police officers attempted to approach the suspect who, in an attempt to escape confrontation by vehicle, ended up pinning them against another car as he reversed which prompted the officers to fire their weapons. At least one round was fired at the suspect, who was pronounced dead at the scene around 6:50 a.m. The deceased, a male in his 20s, was later identified. The officers involved were subsequently taken to the hospital with injuries that appeared to be minor, according to a statement obtained by FOX 10 Phoenix.

As part of the standard procedure following such incidents, the officers' conduct will undergo scrutiny, with the Buckeye Police serving as the primary investigation entity. Both officers were reportedly equipped with activated body cameras at the time of the incident, potentially serving as critical evidence in the forthcoming investigation. The incident did not pose an active threat to the community, noted Peoria Police, but the area remained cordoned off throughout the day to facilitate investigative efforts.

"This is a horrible incident that our officers never want to be put in, you know, when they're making contact with a suspect," Kristopher Babros, a Peoria Police spokesperson, said. While the identities of the involved parties have not yet been released pending notification of next of kin and further proceedings in the ongoing investigation, as reported by FOX 10 Phoenix.
