Phoenix is embracing the spirit of Kwanzaa this year with a first-of-its-kind celebration planned for December 28. The city joins many across the nation in honoring the African American culture and community. Diving into the festive spirit, the Afri-Soul Marketplace at 1145 E. Washington St. is set to host a cultural festival from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., ABC15 reported.
Chef Patty Titcombe, owner of Lasgidi Cafe, outlined the significance of the event, "It's past due for Arizona," she said. "I believe that as we continue to move forward as a community, given all the things that have occurred this year, it's really important to highlight that collective work and responsibility," as stated by ABC15. The celebration falls on the third day of Kwanzaa, which is dedicated to Ujima, symbolizing collective work and responsibility.
Meanwhile, an intriguing calendar rarity has brought multiple holiday celebrations into a shared timeframe this year. Broadly dubbed "Christmakwanzukkah," the convergence encompasses Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa within a 48-hour window, which happens approximately once every 15 years. This blending of cultural observances has incited conversations on unity and shared values. "The fact that they all kind of line up, it really is a beautiful way to say, ‘This is a time of year where we should recognize that everyone has a right to live without fear, without prejudice, to practice and believe what they want,’" Amichai Stout, director of the Jewish Community Relations Council for the Jewish Federation of Greater Toledo, told The Toledo Blade.
Given their lunar calendar, dates for festivities such as Hanukkah and Islamic holidays shift each year. This variability contrasts with the fixed date of Christmas in the Gregorian calendar. Such a synchronization of sacred times, as per those involved in these cultural observances, brings an inadvertent, but meaningful unison. Washington Muhammad, an organizer for Toledo's Kwanzaa House said, "It’s kind of a ‘We're here’ holiday," the Toledo Blade noted.
