On Monday, tragedy struck in central Phoenix when a dispute over a "love triangle" escalated into a deadly shooting. 33-year-old Khalid Williams was arrested on multiple charges, including first-degree murder, for the death of 35-year-old Keshawn Stewart, according to AZFamily.
The complex dynamic that was once shared by Williams and Stewart had come to a violent conclusion near 17th and Maryland avenues. The drama unfolded inside Williams' apartment after a heated argument. After the altercation, as Stewart and his pregnant girlfriend were attempting to leave the area, Williams opened fire on their vehicle, fatally injuring Stewart, Fox 10 Phoenix reported. Williams, for reasons reported to have six prior felonies, is prohibited from owning any weapons.
During Williams' initial court appearance, a statement by the unidentified pregnant woman conveyed the terrifying moments, "He was shooting at us. The bullets hit my boyfriend, causing us to crash. He landed on my belly. My son will never know his father," as stated by AZFamily. In response, Williams said, "They were warned not to come to my home. They were coming to harm me. she’s just as much responsible she should have stopped him," with the victim adding, "I tried," and Williams retorted, "You didn’t."
After his arrest, Williams never denied his role as the shooter when shown video evidence of the incident. Remorseful, he told detectives, "he didn’t deserve that," and stated that he learned about Stewart's death through a Google search and that the only thing he could was "accept responsibility and pray for forgiveness." His bond has been set at $1,000,000 after the prosecutors requested a higher $1.5 million cash-only bond, as per Fox 10 Phoenix.
