Phoenix has just amped up its neighborhood pride with the unveiling of "Elevated," a new public art installation that pays homage to the Eastlake Park community's rich history and culture. The dedication ceremony, which included city officials and residents, spotlighted two 20-foot illuminated sculptures that stand tall at the corners of 16th Street at Washington and Jefferson, marking a significant moment for the historic area, as reported by the City of Phoenix.
The "Elevated" sculptures, designed by artist Joshua Wiener, feature hands that rise, pillar-like, cradling a sunburst of energy the hands symbolize the community's values, including Virtue, Education, Music, Justice, Community, Arts, Equality, and Culture, which are inscribed within the artwork, according to the City of Phoenix. "These hands represent the soul of Eastlake Park. It is a community built on resilience, cooperation, and hope- values that continue to shape this neighborhood’s incredible story," Weiner described the ethos behind his creation.
The inauguration of these sculptures is part of a broader initiative to rejuvenate the Edison-Eastlake Community, with investments aimed at spotlighting the diverse history of the area. Councilwoman Kesha Hodge Washington expressed her deep appreciation, "This project marks a significant moment for the historic Eastlake Community, symbolizing a powerful gateway to its rich heritage and vibrant future," the City of Phoenix stated. She further emphasized the installations' role in both honoring the past and serving as a beacon for tomorrow.
