A 9-year-old girl has died after a four-vehicle crash shut down a stretch of Grand Avenue in Surprise this week, with police saying they do not believe impairment played a role. An adult was also hospitalized in the crash, which happened near 163rd Avenue just before 6 p.m. on Friday.
First responders were called to the multi-vehicle crash on Grand Avenue near 163rd Avenue just before 6 p.m., according to azfamily.com. When officers arrived, they found the 9-year-old girl and an adult hurt, per the Surprise Police Department, and both were taken to a nearby hospital, where the girl later died. The adult's condition has not been released.
The FOX 10 Phoenix report on the crash notes that Surprise police confirmed the girl was hospitalized and died from her injuries on Saturday morning, November 7, 2026. Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the collision, though police believe impairment was not a factor, the outlet reports.
Road Closed For Hours During Investigation
Grand Avenue was closed for several hours during the investigation. Eastbound lanes near 163rd Avenue have since reopened.
The Surprise Police Department offered condolences to the girl's family following her death. “Our thoughts and condolences are with the child's family and loved ones during this difficult time,” the department said, according to FOX 10 Phoenix.
Not The First Multi-Vehicle Wreck On The Corridor
This is not the first time a multi-vehicle crash has snarled traffic on this stretch of Grand Avenue. In February 2024, a three-vehicle crash partially closed the eastbound lanes of U.S. 60/Grand Avenue near the same 163rd Avenue intersection on a Friday afternoon, the same azfamily.com report notes. Three drivers were involved in that earlier crash, and six people were possibly hurt, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety. Those lanes reopened around 4:50 p.m. that day, and the cause of that crash was also unclear as investigators worked to piece together what happened.
