Yesterday morning in southern Massachusetts, Lashii Ortiz, 29, of Plymouth, led police on a high-speed chase. At around 2:41 a.m., Wareham police, aware of Ortiz's felony warrants, attempted to stop a sedan with out-of-state plates, according to Boston 25 News.
According to the Newport Dispatch, Ortiz, attempting to escape, accelerated violently, nearly colliding with a police cruiser as he fled the scene. The escape, punctuated by the deployment of "Stop Sticks" by pursuing officers, while disabled two tires, failed to slow Ortiz’s impromptu flight down Route 25 and Interstate 495, as his speedometer eclipsed 100 mph.
The pursuit came to a decisive end in Brockton after Massachusetts State Police and local law enforcement agencies collaborated to take over the chase from the Wareham units. All of Ortiz’s efforts culminated in his capture and subsequent transport back to Wareham Police Headquarters for processing. Imprinted with felony warrants for crimes including assault and battery on a person over 60, and possession with intent to distribute narcotics, Ortiz now also faces additional charges of unlicensed operation, reckless driving, and failure to stop for police.
Ortiz's warrants stemmed from serious offenses detailed by the authorities, including charges not limited to assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and intimidation of a witness. With the merging forces of state and local agencies, Ortiz driving on tires worn by the stop sticks, continued in desperate momentum until his eventual arrest, as stated by Boston 25 News.
Set at $12,000, bail awaits Ortiz, whose story will advance to the next chapter with his arraignment set at Wareham District Court today.
