Portland's long-serving Fire Chief Ryan Gillespie is set to retire in early spring of 2025. Gillespie, who began his firefighting career with Portland Fire & Rescue (PF&R) in 1998, climbed the ranks over the years, assuming various leadership roles since 2019. As reported by Portland's official news release, Gillespie's tenure has been marked by dedication and significant growth within the department.
In a statement mirroring the sentiment of his service, Gillespie expressed the honor he felt serving the community. "It has been an incredible honor to serve the City of Portland and to lead an amazing team of dedicated fire service professionals," Gillespie told the City of Portland, Oregon. He continued, detailing how, "Together, Portland Fire & Rescue has faced numerous challenges and through it all, our team has continually stepped up and shown professionalism, compassion, and sacrifice, always putting the community first."
The departure of Gillespie has drawn commendations from city officials. Deputy City Administrator for Public Safety Mike Myers thanked Gillespie for his service, wishing him luck in his future endeavors. Echoing Myers, Mayor Ted Wheeler praised the fire chief's leadership, stating via the City of Portland, Oregon website, "Chief Gillespie has been an exemplary leader and a dedicated public servant throughout his tenure with Portland Fire & Rescue," and recognized the department for emerging stronger after navigating various challenges under Gillespie's guidance.
According to plans before his retirement retreat, Gillespie will collaborate with Mike Myers and City Administrator Mike Jordan to identify an appropriate interim fire chief. Chief Gillespie's legacy is set to include a well-organized transition, ensuring that the strategic leadership of PF&R continues seamlessly. As the hunt for the interim chief begins, the timeline stays focused on a March 4, 2025, transition, as outlined in the city's news release.
