President Joe Biden reduced the sentences of 37 inmates, including Ricardo Sanchez, Jr., and Daniel Troya, who were convicted of a 2006 crime on Florida's Turnpike. The two men, responsible for the murders of Jose Luis Escobedo, his wife Yessica, and their two children, will now serve life sentences instead of facing execution. The crime involved the fatal shooting of the family after they were forced to stop their vehicle on the Turnpike, as reported by CBS12.
Sanchez and Troya had been linked to a violent West Palm Beach drug gang, which hastened their involvement in the crime. The pair conducted not only the murders but were also found guilty of numerous drug trafficking and weapons offenses. They were sentenced to die in 2009 but have now been effectively spared to now serve life sentences without the possibility of parole.
News4Jax reports that the two men stalked the Escobedo family for hours before committing the crime. The crime was described by a three-judge appellate panel as "gangland-style murders," with Troya and Sanchez having personally interacted with the family before executing them.
With these sentence commutations, only three inmates remain on federal death row, including Dylann Roof and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. President Biden's decision reduces the use of the federal death penalty, sparing Sanchez, Troya, and others convicted of serious crimes, including killings of law enforcement officers and drug-related homicides.
