Early this morning in Puna's Hawaiian Beaches Subdivision, a homeowner's vigilance and a rapid police response led to the arrest of 30-year-old Michael Anderson on charges of property and drug crimes. The homeowner, witnessing suspicious activity via a home surveillance system around 11:15 a.m., alerted police who were fortuitously nearby, as reported by the Hawai‘i Police Department.
Within minutes of the call, officers arrived and discovered a breached living room window. After an interior search yielded no immediate suspects, their attention turned to a locked Toyota pickup in the garage, where they spotted a leg protruding from beneath some bags. Anderson revealed his presence after police issued commands and was subsequently detained. The property owner confirmed that Anderson had no authorization to be inside the dwelling or the vehicle.
This incident fast-tracked the Puna man to the East Hawai’i Detention Facility under suspicion of multiple infractions. A backpack at the scene, searched under warrant by detectives, appeared to hold items potentially linked to another burglary in the same subdivision, along with methamphetamine and related paraphernalia. The ensuing charges against Anderson, unveiled by the police statement, included first-degree burglary, second-degree unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle, third-degree promotion of a dangerous drug, and third-degree criminal property damage.
With bail set at $17,000 and unable to secure his release, Anderson faced a judge in South Hilo District Court just two days after his arrest. As he remains ensnared within the judicial process, the police continue their investigation and have made a public appeal. Anyone holding information potentially relevant to the case is urged to contact Detective David Po‘ohina or, for those wishing anonymity, to call Crime Stoppers; both points of contact ensure confidentiality and offer the chance of a monetary reward for substantive tips.
