Ricky Martin energized attendees at a World AIDS Day concert at the University of Miami's Watsco Center. Famed for his pop anthems and global influence, Martin lent his voice to the cause that annually draws attention to the ongoing fight against HIV/AIDS. According to WSVN, this year’s theme, "Collective Action: Sustain and accelerate HIV progress," resonates with Martin's two-decade-long advocacy work.

The free concert took place last night. "Life has highs and lows, but we’re here standing, standing strong," Martin told the crowd, a sentiment highlighting the persistent struggle against the disease. In an alarming statistic shared by NBC Miami, Miami-Dade County is noted for having the highest rate of new HIV cases in the country, particularly among Hispanic and Black communities.

Tracy Jones, the southern bureau chief for the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, emphasized the importance of awareness and action in a statement obtained by NBC Miami. "We want people to hear that HIV is not over, that we are still experiencing people that are coming down with HIV illness who are living their lives with HIV illness, and that stigma kills," said Jones. The AIDS Healthcare Foundation claimed to be the largest HIV/AIDS healthcare provider worldwide, played a pivotal role in organizing the event.

During the event, the focus was also on the human experience of those living with HIV/AIDS. "Just because a person is living with HIV or AIDS, they still need to be loved," Jones said, "They still need to be hugged. They still need to have their families," as noted by NBC Miami. To this end, the AHF championed the critical importance of getting tested and knowing one's status, providing free tests to assist in curbing HIV’s spread.

With roughly 1.2 million Americans living with HIV, as reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the call to sustain and accelerate efforts against the epidemic is as urgent now as ever before.
