The Rocklin Police Department is tightening its grip on impaired driving this holiday season, with a DUI checkpoint scheduled on December 20. The checkpoint will be enforced from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. at a location yet to be disclosed, in a bid to reduce the incidents of crashes related to driving under the influence, according to FOX40.
Data-driven strategies have pinpointed the need for such a checkpoint, targeting areas with a higher frequency of impaired driving-related accidents. "Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk," explained RPD Lieutenant Osborn, and the ultimate goal of these operations is the bolstering of public safety by removing such threats from the roads. The assertions were part of a statement obtained by the Rocklin Police Department press release.
It's not just alcohol consumption that's raising red flags for law enforcement. The Rocklin Police Department is spotlighting the risks posed by other substances, including prescribed medications and legal marijuana. "Some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving," the department noted, adding that "while medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal."
Drivers caught driving under the influence can find themselves saddled with significant financial and legal consequences. A first-time DUI offense comes with an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, and on top of that, a suspended license, as per FOX40. Backing the checkpoint is a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
