Jonathan Mejia, a 28-year-old Roslindale resident, found himself in cuffs yesterday. Boston Police, specifically their Drug Control Unit of District A-7 in East Boston, nabbed Mejia on various firearm charges. The officers were entrenched in an ongoing drug investigation when they stumbled upon a scene ripe with suspicion on Bennington Street.
An idle vehicle caught the officers' attention when an individual, bag in hand, slipped into the front passenger seat. After a brief period, not exceeding five minutes, the passenger exited the car. Something about the situation, or perhaps the car's stillness, led officers to suspect a drug transaction had taken place. They followed the vehicle to the entrance of the Ted Williams Tunnel, where a traffic stop occurred. The driver, Mejia, seemed nervous, repeatedly dropping his left hand to his side.
Suspicious, officers ordered Mejia to exit his vehicle. A pat-down led to a revealing search: a Glock 43, with one round in the chamber and five more in the magazine, was found in his jacket pocket. The discovery didn't end with the firearm; approximately $4,486 in worn U.S. currency was also recovered, according to a statement from the Boston Police Department.
With the evidence collected and charges filed, Mejia was taken into custody. He faces counts of Unlawful Possession of Firearm, Unlawful Possession of Ammunition, and Unlawful Possession of a Loaded Firearm. The gears of justice grind forward, anticipating Mejia's arraignment at East Boston District Court.
