
Following a routine traffic check last Thursday night, a 26-year-old man was arrested by members of the Salt Lake City Police Department for multiple offenses, including the unlawful possession of a firearm and driving a vehicle with an expired registration.
The incident occurred at approximately 9:51 p.m. on Redwood Road, south of North Temple, where SLCPD officers initiated the stop after noting the expired registration, during this intervention, they discovered that the driver, Wilmer Torres Guedez, was operating the vehicle without insurance and also had an outstanding warrant, according to Salt Lake City Police Department.
Further investigation revealed that Torres Guedez was legally restricted from possessing a firearm due to his criminal history, yet during the stop, officers located a handgun in his possession and additionally noted the presence of a five-year-old child who was not restrained with a proper child restraint device.
As a result, Torres Guedez was taken into custody and booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail facing charges that include being in unlawful possession of a dangerous weapon as a restricted person, driving without proper vehicle registration or insurance, and neglecting to provide a child restraint device for a child under eight, these are allegations, with the presumption of innocence maintained unless proven otherwise, as detailed by Salt Lake City Police Department.
Regarding jail booking photos, the SLCPD clarified that, under the Utah Code, such images are largely restricted from public release before conviction, except under specific circumstances such as the individual being a fugitive or posing an imminent threat, custody of these records is held by the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office.
