The Salt Lake City Police Department has released body-cam footage from an incident involving 50-year-old John Gianini, following an officer-involved critical incident activation, with Police Chief Mike Brown expressing the tragedy of the case, as obtained by SLCPD, "This is a very tragic case," Chief Brown said, "based on my review of the body-worn camera footage, and the information we have received, it appears Mr. Gianini was already in the stages of critical medical decline by the time our officers arrived on scene."
The incident, which resulted in Mr. Gianini's death, began when SLC911 received calls from concerned citizens about a man, later identified as Gianini, who was naked and in apparent distress near the intersection of 800 South 700 East; the police were dispatched at 5 p.m. and arrived shortly after, only to find Gianini naked and in a deteriorated physical state, though conscious, he was unresponsive and was described as "growling" during a conversation captured on the body-worn camera footage between an officer and a supervisor, according to the preliminary summary released by the department.
The police, alongside two social workers, provided Mr. Gianini with clothing and blankets and sought medical help which arrived shortly after he had been handcuffed for attempting to stand, against instructions to remain seated, before which paramedics requested that they meet them en route due to Mr. Gianini's declining health. Gold Cross Ambulance said that "Mr. Gianini had altered mental status, low blood pressure, was hypothermic, and they could not get vitals.," as obtained by SLCPD. Despite efforts to stabilize him, Gianini passed away in the hospital with the cause of death still pending a medical examiner's determination.
The two officers involved are now on standard paid administrative leave as the OICI Protocol Team 4 (West Jordan Police) leads the independent investigation into the case. This incident marks the fourth OICI protocol activation for the Salt Lake City Police Department in the year 2024. The footage provided by the SLCPD has been edited to redact Mr. Gianini's nudity, in respect for his privacy, with the BWC footage ending as paramedics begin medical treatment; the provided links lead to the body-worn camera footage, as well as the 9-1-1 calls that precipitated the event, albeit with the aforementioned redactions in place.
