Salt Lake City is poised for a significant transformation as Mayor Erin Mendenhall and city leaders unveiled three varied concepts for revamping the iconic Smith's Ballpark site, aiming to invigorate the 13.5-acre space to reflect the Ballpark neighborhood's values and support sustainable growth, according to Salt Lake City. "This is a once-in-a-century opportunity to breathe new life into one of Salt Lake City’s most family-centric spaces while staying true to the heart of the Ballpark neighborhood," Mayor Mendenhall said, ensuring that the revamp is a result of meticulous collaboration with the locality’s inhabitants.

During an RDA meeting, urban design firm Perkins&Will, which was chosen earlier this year to lead the design effort, delineated each potential path including a sports-focused option that transforms the field into a year-round destination for different levels of athletic events, an arts and culture hub converting part of the stadium into a community events venue, and another which integrates nature by daylighting local creeks and integrating park spaces within the urban design, these scenarios, each aligning sports, culture, or ecology with the area's historical and cultural significance, Mayor Mendenhall and city leaders are striving to reinvent an integral part of the city's fabric through these visionary concepts.

The sports-centric 'Preserve' concept aims to reinvigorate the stadium at the core while promoting a lively neighborhood scene, complete with markets and local commerce. The 'Adaptive reuse' plan envisions an arts and cultural nexus, maintaining parts of the stadium and introducing versatile green spaces for public assembly and creative expression. The 'Completely rebuild' approach foregrounds ecological considerations, blending civic and residential spaces with an organic palette and recreational outlets. "Community feedback has been the backbone of this project," stated Lauren Parisi, RDA Project Manager, as per Salt Lake City.
