On the North Side of San Antonio, a police altercation led to an officer discharging their weapon at a suspect during a chase. The incident unfolded just before 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in the vicinity of 300 Melrose Place, near Howard Street, as reported on KSAT.
Police Chief William McManus explained that the Covert Unit had been following two individuals wanted for "violent offenses." Attempting to flee in a stolen vehicle, the two men took notice of the police presence and abandoned their effort, leading to a foot chase. While running behind an apartment complex, one of the men drew a weapon, which prompted an officer to shoot, striking the suspect once, as reported by KSAT.
Local witness George Herrera, upon arriving at the H-E-B store on Olmos Drive for last-minute supplies, found himself amidst the unfolding drama. "As soon as we pulled into the parking lot, there were police officers running," Herrera recounted in an interview obtained by KSAT. "We really didn’t know what was going on. The officers cornered off the area pretty quickly. It was pretty intense."
While the condition of the suspect hit by gunfire has not been disclosed, both he and the second suspect were taken into custody, as per police protocol. According to Chief McManus, who spoke to the media, it remains unclear whether the suspect discharged his own weapon during the altercation. This account was also corroborated by information provided by News 4 San Antonio.
