A tragic incident unfolded at Mesa Viking Park in Mira Mesa last Friday, where a man, alongside his son, was mercilessly attacked by three dogs, which, as it turned out, were his own. In a report by 10News, the San Diego Police Department confirmed that the attack occurred around noon, and the man succumbed to his injuries later the same day. While the attack was happening, the event's proximity to Ericson Elementary School prompted a brief lockdown as a safety measure.
The San Diego Humane Society, who announced the euthanization of the dogs a day following the attack, stated in a commentary obtained by NBC San Diego that their "hearts and deepest sympathies go out to the victim’s loved ones." In response to the chaotic scene, police officers had to resort to using their tasers to put an end to the mauling. The dual approach by the San Diego Humane Society and law enforcement indicates their commitment to handling the investigation with utmost importance and scrutiny.
As he relayed to NBC San Diego, neighbor Paul Ngo witnessed the man with the dogs moments before the turmoil broke out. He recalls seeing "a person running around with three dogs," and overhearing the man admonishing the animals to "be gentle, be nice." Despite the peaceful scene moments prior, the dogs turned on their owner, resulting in fatal consequences.
Meanwhile, the local community is reeling from the impact. Residents familiar with the normally tranquil park are left grappling with the viciousness of the attack that unfolded in their vicinity. "You don't really have stuff like this that happens here... Like somebody's face got mangled at this park. An hour from now this park can be filled with kids coming out of that school. It's sad that that could've happened to little kids — the elementary school's right here," a concerned neighbor told 10News.
The man's son, who was present during the attack but remained unharmed, is now with his mother. The authorities have not disclosed information about the dog breeds. The San Diego Police Department continues to handle the case as an active investigation, seeking to uncover further details surrounding this unexpected and tragic incident.
