In an unexpected twist in San Francisco's culinary scene, the reputed bagel shop Daily Driver has announced it is closing its doors today. The company, which has grown quite a following for its wood-fired bagels and in-house dairy products, declared on its Instagram account that it would be shutting down its operations. "Sadly, it has come time for a transition for Daily Driver. Monday will be our last day," the Daily Driver posted, hinting at "exciting developments" for the Dogpatch location under new ownership.
Despite a report from the San Francisco Chronicle, which revealed the shop's closure, the reasons behind the decision remained vague. "The model isn’t working," the business owners stated without providing additional details. It was a surprising revelation given the company's expansion over the past several years, which included multiple outposts in San Francisco, among them the Ferry Building and Ghirardelli Square.
Founded by Tamara Hicks and David Jablons of Toluma Farms and Tomales Farmstead Creamery in partnership with Hadley and David Kreitz in 2019, Daily Driver quickly became a staple in the local foodie landscape. Known for their artful combination of wood-fired bagels and fresh-churned dairy, patrons of Dogpatch's flagship location at 2535 Third St. were often treated to the spectacle of bagels being made in real-time. The establishment boasted a bakery and cafe, a coffee roaster, and the claimed title of San Francisco's first urban creamery.
As the shop prepares to say its goodbyes, the Daily Driver team shows gratitude towards their patrons. "We are deeply thankful for each and every customer!!! We had a wonderful 6 years!" the Daily Driver Instagram post reflected. Although this marks the end of an era for the business as we know it, the Dogpatch location is set to be reborn under new ownership. Employees of Daily Driver have been assured that they will continue working at the incoming restaurant. San Francisco food enthusiasts are on the lookout, eager to see what new culinary adventure awaits in the beloved Dogpatch space.
