Combining emergency preparedness with a dose of festive spirit, firefighters performed rappel drills down the side of the hospital building, transforming a regular exercise into an occasion of joy for young patients and staff. In a display that would capture the attention of passersby along Meridian Mark Rd., the firefighters descended level by level. They carried the added weight of presents and stopped at each floor to interact with the onlooking children through the glass. These trained rope rescue technicians waved and gestured in their gear, perhaps forgetting for a moment the gravity of their day-to-day duties in the service of a lighter cause. After completing their rappel, the team distributed presents and custom SSFD beanies, a touch of warmth both literal and figurative for the recipients.
The hospital's holiday event was also graced by appearances from Santa Claus and an entourage of crowd-pleasers, including the Atlanta Braves mascot Blooper, and superheroes like Spider-Man and Superman.
