Yesterday morning, a catastrophic hit-and-run incident on Interstate 95 in Miami-Dade County claimed the life of an individual driving a gold Nissan sedan. The Florida Highway Patrol is currently on a search for the person behind the dark blue BMW sedan responsible for the collision, as reported by CBS Miami. The crash occurred around 4 a.m. on the southbound side of the highway, south of NW 79th Street, where the BMW is believed to have struck the Nissan from behind.
The impact led to the Nissan bursting into flames and becoming fully engulfed with the driver trapped inside, ultimately resulting in their death at the scene. The grim aftermath prompted responses from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, who quickly arrived to extinguish the blaze. However, the driver of a BMW had already fled, leaving behind a scene of destruction and tragedy. Roadways had to be temporarily shut down as a consequence of the incident.
Adding further details to the unfortunate incident, Local 10 News shared a statement from FHP spokesman Lt. Alex Camacho, "Both vehicles traveled several hundred feet before coming to final rest in the outside lanes of I-95," and that "due to the collision, the Nissan became fully engulfed in flames with the driver still inside." The intensity of the fire also left significant damage on the roadway itself, which will necessitate repairs.
Investigative efforts by FHP are ongoing to locate the BMW's driver as the community reels from this tragedy. Compounding the dismay, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue personnel were also dispatched to other road incidents this morning, including a fatal crash on the Florida Turnpike at Hollywood Boulevard in Broward County, and another along I-75 at mile marker 29. No information regarding the identification of the deceased or the fugitive driver has been released at this time.
