Seattle's cold winters often bring frozen pipes and closed park facilities, but Seattle Parks and Recreation is working to keep restrooms open across the city. The department has completed its winter preparations, weatherizing park restrooms and drinking fountains to prevent freezing. However, many other restrooms and fountains will remain closed until March 2025, as per a City of Seattle release.
Progress has been made under the Park District 2023-2028 Financial Plan, with plans to make all 129 public restrooms operational year-round. This year, an additional 10 restrooms have been prepared for the winter season. Facilities that have been winterized and will remain open include restrooms at Alki Beach, Lincoln Park, and Golden Gardens. These restrooms may still close temporarily for repairs or during extreme cold.
A list of open restrooms this winter has been released, with first-time winter openings highlighted.
