West Newbury experienced an unexpected disruption yesterday as severe weather conditions contributed to a vehicular accident involving a commercial building on Main Street. According to Boston25News, a silver Toyota Highlander collided with the right side of the structure at 290 Main Street. Police officers responded to the crash and discovered the vehicle's 17-year-old driver, its sole occupant, who was evaluated for injuries at the scene.
The collision, occurring amid a renovation project, fortuitously involved a building that was unoccupied at the time of the incident, hence avoiding what could have been a much more grievous event, had the structure been in use at that moment. "The Groveland Fire Department and Atlantic Ambulance provided mutual aid assistance," reported JGPR, confirming the collaborative efforts of various first responders on the scene; additionally, both the West Newbury Building Inspector and West Newbury Water Department arrived to evaluate the building's condition and directly after the crash, electrical services to the building were disconnected as a precaution.
Initial assessments suggested that the severe weather, coupled with the subsequent degradation of road conditions, played a critical role in the causation of the accident. It was snowing at the time which likely contributed to the deteriorated state of the roads and ultimately, the vehicular crash. The 17-year-old driver, a female, fortunately, did not sustain serious injuries in the incident.
Local authorities, including Police Chief Michael Dwyer, are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding a crash that left a commercial building on Main Street damaged.
