A woman was subjected to a pepper spray attack and attempted purse snatching at the Town Center at Boca Raton, according to CBS12 News. Details provided by the Boca Raton Police Department indicate the incident took place in the mall's east parking lot at 6000 W Glades Road, just after 4:30 p.m. on Sunday. The assailant attempted to seize a luxury handbag the victim had recently purchased, as she was walking to her vehicle.

Upon approaching the victim, the suspect used pepper spray and tried to take the shopping bag, resulting in a struggle. After the scuffle, described as a white woman of average height, between 30 to 50 years old with brown hair, fled without the handbag and remains at large. The victim, whose day out ended in a harrowing ordeal, sustained minor injuries during the event.

In a statement obtained by Boca News Now, the BRPD revealed that officers had conducted a search, but failed to apprehend the suspect. The police urge anyone with information to contact Detective Dale Graham at (561) 620-6175 or to remain anonymous by calling CrimeStoppers of Palm Beach County at 800-458-TIPS.

Local reactions to the crime highlight concerns about safety, especially in an area perceived as affluent. “This mall could be a target because of how usually it’s mostly well-off people that live in this area of Boca," Claudia Elysee told CBS12 News. This sentiment echoes the unease felt by new resident Eric Leiner, who called the news of the attack shocking, deeming such incidents unbefitting a supposedly safe neighborhood.

Notably, this is not the first incident of its kind at the Town Center; there was another purse-snatching event back in September. Shoppers, now grappling with the reality of the situation, stress the importance of self-protection in public spaces. "I need to have stuff on me because that’s crazy," Bergelie Benjamin stated, as shoppers around her nod in somber agreement, determined to remain vigilant amidst the holiday season's bustle and a specter of brazen criminality.
