A Springfield man faces charges after six puppies were found abandoned in a taped-shut box without food, water, or ventilation. The puppies were discovered by a local resident near a bus stop on 54th Street earlier this month, prompting an investigation by Springfield Animal Control. The puppies, several weeks old, were temporarily housed at the Springfield Justice Center before being transferred to Greenhill Humane Society, according to the City of Springfield.
Investigators linked the puppies to 72-year-old Jeffery Lynn Dugger after finding a box with a shipping label displaying his address. Dugger had previously contacted Greenhill and threatened to dispose of the animals if they could not take them immediately. It appears Dugger followed through on the threat by leaving the puppies in a dangerous condition.
Dugger has been charged with six counts of Animal Abandonment – Cruelty.
