The St. Louis Mayor's Office has confirmed that the city's Corrections Commissioner, Jennifer Clemons-Abdullah, is no longer employed in that position, as reported by multiple sources this weekend. A spokesperson for Mayor Tishaura O. Jones conveyed that the termination was effective immediately, "Today, Jennifer Clemons-Abdullah’s employment with the City of St. Louis was separated effective immediately," Conner Kerrigan said, as stated in a FOX 2 report. Meanwhile, Tammy Ross takes on the role as the acting Commissioner of Corrections.
Further details on the abrupt ending of Clemons-Abdullah's tenure have not been officially disclosed, and the city refrained from specifying whether the exit was due to resignation, or termination. After a leave of absence that began on September 19 and her return to the role on December 11, she finds herself out of the job under the shadow of sustained troubles at the St. Louis Justice Center — including jail riots, insufficient healthcare for inmates, and multiple detainee deaths — according to a First Alert 4 article.
Activists and the Detention Facilities Oversight Board (DFOB), who have previously voiced their criticisms, continue to watch closely how this change will affect the operations and transparency within the Justice Center. A statement from Rev. Darryl Gray, the chairperson of the DFOB, obtained by First Alert 4, expressed hope that "the public safety director and the new CJC leadership do not renege on the commitment that Clements Abdullah made to the DFOB to immediately provide access to DFOB Staff to conduct interviews."
Mayor Jones has previously committed to addressing the issues within the city's incarceration system, promising reforms and better conditions after the notorious riots and reports of inhumane treatment. Yet, despite efforts such as hiring a new healthcare provider for the downtown jail, these measures have, perhaps not sufficed in the face of persistent turmoil — including more than a dozen detainee deaths, and conflicts with oversight entities — as detailed in a report by STLToday.
