In Sunnyvale, the local Department of Public Safety's headquarters and a memorial dedicated to a fallen officer became the targets of vandalism in a brazen broad daylight attack. According to a Facebook post by the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety, the incident occurred yesterday at approximately 2:40 PM. The suspect, identified as Ryan Matthew O'Reilly, began his destructive act at the Fallen Officer's Memorial outside the DPS headquarters.
O'Reilly was seen removing and discarding flower arrangements from the memorial, then proceeded to break into the DPS building by throwing a rock through the sliding glass doors. Records personnel who were present heard the breaking glass and upon witnessing the scene, quickly retreated to call Dispatch and the Desk Officer. As per the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety, "O'Reilly stood at the window for a few seconds, then picked up the rock and threw it through the other glass sliding door before exiting the lobby."
The suspect was found and arrested nearby without further incident and has since been booked into the County Jail on multiple felonies. Despite the disruption and damage, no injuries were reported from the encounter. As repairs are being made, the front lobby doors of DPS headquarters have been temporarily boarded up.
