
Two months after a man was fatally shot in Southeast D.C., a suspect has been apprehended by law enforcement. The Metropolitan Police Department reports that the incident, which took place on October 23, 2024, unfolded on the 2300 block of Pennsylvania Avenue, Southeast around 11:43 a.m., when officers were summoned to the scene of a shooting. As per the officials, upon their arrival, two men were found with gunshot wounds, and both were quickly taken to a local hospital for emergency care.
One of the men, identified as 44-year-old Antonio Kojesus Riley from the same district, succumbed to his injuries. According to the Metropolitan Police Department's release, the second victim, sustaining critical injuries at the time, is still under medical treatment. Unfortunately, the details surrounding his current condition remained undisclosed.
In the wake of the shooting, detectives carried out a rigorous investigation, leading to an arrest warrant issued by D.C. Superior Court. Yesterday, 22-year-old Dawayne Smith, a resident of Southeast, was located by members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force and taken into custody. "As a result of the detectives investigation, Smith was charged with First Degree Murder while Armed," the department confirmed.
