The pursuit of justice can often be a lengthy and complex endeavor, a reality underscored by the recent capture of a suspect wanted by the Plymouth Police Department for serious sex offenses. Werlen Luiz, a 48-year-old Brazilian native, had been a fugitive since 2021, but his time on the run ended last November when U.S. Marshals apprehended him in Statesville, North Carolina. The arrest followed extensive investigative efforts led by Detective Robert Shaw, who, upon receiving a tip in July 2024, was able to track Luiz's whereabouts within the United States.
According to a statement by the Plymouth Police Department on Facebook, multiple search warrants executed over the past several months pointed to Luiz's location in North Carolina, ultimately leading to his capture. Charged with seven counts of rape of a child with a ten-year age difference, one count of assault & battery, and one count of strangulation or suffocation, Luiz is now facing justice on American soil.
Luiz was processed at Plymouth Police Headquarters and is expected to be arraigned in Plymouth District Court today. The Plymouth Police Department has extended gratitude towards Plymouth County District Attorney Timothy Cruz and his office for their aid in the case, emphasizing the collaborative effort that was required to bring Luiz to account for his alleged crimes.
