In a sequence of events that escalated quickly before reaching a peaceful resolution, the South San Francisco Police Department (SSFPD) dealt with a subject who initially fled from officers and subsequently entered a high school campus, prompting an emergency response. The incident began on the 300 block of El Camino Real and concluded with the evacuation of students from the high school, as stated in a social media update from the SSFPD.
The situation began last Friday afternoon when officers made contact with an individual who, disregarding the immediate consequences, elected to flee and invaded the confines of a nearby high school, choosing to seclude himself within a classroom. This action led to a prompt evacuation of students, ensuring their safety. Throughout the process, a combination of patrol officers, Crisis Negotiators, and a Mental Health Clinician worked collaboratively to de-escalate the situation, which resulted in the individual surrendering voluntarily after several tense hours. "The subject was transported to a medical facility and is receiving treatment pending criminal charges related to the incident," the SSFPD revealed on their official Facebook page, providing a brief yet comprehensive overview of the outcome.
No students or faculty were harmed during the incident, as the evacuation process was carried out efficiently and without incident. The departments involved have been commended for handling the situation, particularly the efforts to prioritize mental health considerations amid what could have escalated into a more dangerous scenario.
