A suspect wanted in connection with a fatal shooting at Fort Eisenhower was taken into custody after a vehicle pursuit that ended in Meriwether County, roughly three hours from the military base. According to the FOX 5 Atlanta report, the incident at the U.S. Army base located near Augusta occurred before 9 a.m. on Saturday and led to an "active shooter" alert and a lockdown of the base.
Following the shooting, that left one man dead, whose identity has yet to be disclosed, the Meriwether County Sheriff's Office was notified of the suspect’s potential route. As reported by AJC, deputies identified the vehicle traveling southbound on I-85 and made a calculated stop to apprehend the suspect who was seen disposing of a handgun from the vehicle's passenger window.
During an executed traffic stop around the 29-mile marker, Meriwether County Sergeant Bradford and Deputy Presley arrested the suspect without further altercation, acquiring vital evidence in the process. The captured suspect was then handed over to the U.S. Army’s Criminal Investigation Division (CID), together with the evidence collected from the scene, as detailed by FOX 5 Atlanta.
"I appreciate the work that our personnel and all other supporting agencies did in the apprehension of this wanted suspect," said Meriwether County Sheriff Chuck Smith, as he expressed relief that the high-risk capture concluded without additional incident. The precise details surrounding the evidence recovered have not been made public, and neither has the name of the suspect, who is currently in custody, As reported by AJC.
In the aftermath of the Fort Eisenhower shooting, authorities briefly locked down the base, and it disrupted the usual calm of a Saturday morning, leading to the cancellation of the day's Army-Navy football game activities.
