South Fulton police are currently investigating a distressing incident at a new senior living facility where a man claimed to have killed someone in self-defense. This grim scenario unfolded at the Jonesboro Road Senior Village on Friday evening, according to details first reported by FOX 5 Atlanta. The police were alerted through an emergency 911 call and found the man who placed the call sitting on the grass upon their arrival.
Authorities proceeded to the mentioned facility's second floor, where they encountered a partially open apartment door. Inside, they discovered Debra Curtis, a 66-year-old woman, unresponsive and sprawled on the living room floor, surrounded by signs of disturbance, including broken glass and overturned items, as noted by 11Alive. After some delay due to a language barrier, the man gave limited details to the officers that hinted at the self-defense claim.
Curtis was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders. A witness, who was not identified, reported an argument between a man and a woman prior to the discovery of the deceased. As of now, the man who called 911 is being detained as investigators are piecing together the circumstances of this alleged altercation.
Ramon S. Vidal, a resident of the community, expressed his dismay over the incident, mentioning to FOX 5 Atlanta, "It's very sad to hear that." Vidal, along with other residents, was surprised by the event, emphasizing the building's typically tranquil atmosphere since its opening six months ago. "It's quiet, extremely quiet," he reiterated, now considering a safety adjustment after the incident. "Now, I'm nervous. I've been telling my wife let's use the front door parking here in front and use the front door."
The investigation is ongoing, and the authorities have not yet released further details regarding the identities of those involved, beyond the name of the victim. The community waits as law enforcement works to unravel the truth behind this tragedy at what was otherwise deemed a serene haven for seniors.
