Early this morning, a high-speed police pursuit on Interstate 93 in Boston ended abruptly when a stolen BMW, driven by two 15-year-old boys, collided with a pickup truck, subsequently striking a state police cruiser and crashing into a guardrail. According to NBC Boston, the crash, which occurred before 10 a.m. on I-93 north, led to a temporary shutdown of the highway as emergency crews and state police responded to the scene.
Milton police initially spotted the stolen BMW, which failed to stop for a trooper and instead sped onto I-93 North, where the crash occurred. The two teenagers—whose identities are undisclosed due to their age—are now facing charges related to vehicle theft, negligent driving, and operating without a license, as per the Massachusetts State Police. Heavy traffic backups were visible in aerial footage.
The driver of the pickup was transported to the hospital for evaluation; fortunately, no other injuries have been reported. Both northbound and southbound lanes of the highway were affected, causing significant traffic delays, with lanes reopening just after 10 a.m. as reported by Boston 25 News.
The police pursuit had commenced on the southbound side of I-93 near Dorchester Avenue, culminating in the crash near Exit 13A on the northbound side. During the cleanup and investigation, traffic was rerouted at Exit 11 and the Neponset onramp for around 20 minutes. The cause of the crash is still under investigation as authorities work through the details of this morning's events.
