On Thursday evening, a 2-year-old girl was struck by a vehicle near the intersection of Coburn and West Third streets in Lowell, Massachusetts. She sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital in Boston. Her current condition is not known, as reported by NBC Boston.
Witnesses say the child may have run into the street between two parked cars and was hit by a truck. Enid Rios, a local resident, said, "Whoever was coming was never going to see her." Carlos Martinez, another witness, said he saw the girl break free from her mother's grip while leaving daycare before the truck struck her, as reported by WCVB.
The driver involved in the accident in Lowell stayed at the scene and cooperated with police, who are still investigating how the child was hit. A neighbor, Rios, described helping the mother, saying, "I prayed all along. I held the mother because she had nothing, she didn't know what to do. She was yelling, 'My baby, my baby, God, don't take my baby!" The driver, shaken by the situation, was heard saying, "Please, God, I can't take a life," according to NBC Boston.
