Maynard James Keenan, known for his role as frontman of TOOL, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer, is now grappling with a different kind of performance; teaching Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in his latest film venture. The rock icon has announced the release of "The Great In Between: An Introduction to Jiu Jitsu," a 90-minute tutorial welcoming beginners to the physical and mental challenges of the martial art, Phoenix New Times reported.
The film was shot at Keenan's Verde Valley Brazilian Jiu Jitsu academy in Cottonwood, Arizona, a venue that seems to offer the perfect backdrop for this hands-on seminar. According to a Revolver Magazine report, Keenan, along with a team of skilled black belts, will lead participants in developing stabilizing muscles and myelin connections—key elements for building a strong foundation in this "confidence-building, puzzle-solving martial art."
The release of this instructional video comes after Keenan himself earned a black belt earlier this year and now seeks to impart knowledge gleaned from various Jiu Jitsu practitioners. "I'm not great at Jiu Jitsu, but I understand Jiu Jitsu," Keenan humbly jokes in the film's trailer, as per Revolver Magazine.
Set to premiere next Friday through the Puscifer TV website, "The Great In Between: An Introduction to Jiu Jitsu" is currently available for preorder. Alongside the option of a 72-hour rental, fans can also grab commemorative merchandise that accompanies the tutorial. In a nod to the holiday season, a Cyber Monday special offers a 20% discount on bundles costing over $50 with the promo code VVBJJ24, as reported by the Phoenix New Times.
In related news, Puscifer recently announced a new coffee table book showcasing a collection of their past concert posters. They also revealed additional Sessanta tour dates for 2025, featuring A Perfect Circle and Primus, as reported by Revolver Magazine. Keenan continues to engage audiences across different fields, from music to martial arts, with his latest project offering fans a new way to connect with his artistic endeavors.
