A major motorcycle crash on U.S. 1 in Florida City Thursday caused significant traffic disruptions. Emergency services, including air rescue, responded quickly near mile marker 124 in the southbound lanes.
According to NBC Miami, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue reported to a medical call with reports of a downed motorcyclist and had to momentarily use the highway as a landing zone for the rescue helicopter. The accident prompted authorities to block off traffic in both directions along the 18-Mile Stretch between mile markers 123 and 125.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Office provided updates on Facebook about the traffic delay and later announced the lanes had reopened at 1 p.m., according to the Miami Herald. Traffic cameras captured the air rescue helicopter's arrival and departure during the incident, as drivers experienced a standstill, with some leaving their vehicles.
Emergency services attended to the crash victim, who was airlifted to Jackson South Medical Center for treatment. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue described the individual as an adult trauma patient, but no further details about their condition were released. Rescue teams and authorities worked to manage the scene and reopen the roadway, clearing the traffic delay.
